How to Handle Discouragement
By:Kristin Hutchings

We all have to handle discouragement from time to time and it is certainly not an easy emotion to deal with. Discouragement usually occurs when something doesn't happen in the way or in the time frame we wished. For example, you work very hard on a task in your job and hope to receive good results such as a rise in your salary or a promotion, but instead you are simply given another project to work on. What you hoped for didn't happen and as a result, discouragement sets in.

This happens all too frequently when you attempt to predict the future outcome of something. Another example is setting up a new business and expecting to see profits early on. You work hard every day, expending a lot of effort and energy on your goal of setting up a successful and profitable business. But after six months there is still no sign of any profit and you have not gained the number of clients or customers you hoped for. The discouragement you experience makes you wonder if your goal is, in fact, unreachable and merely a dream. You start to question your talents and capabilities and wonder if you will ever succeed at anything. Discouragement can be very damaging for your confidence if you do not handle it in the correct way.

In order to handle discouragement, you must feel your discouragement clearly rather than try to push it aside and deny its existence. It is never comfortable to feel such emotions, but feeling your discouragement and accepting you feel like that is an important stage in order to work through it. Denying your discouragement will only allow it to fester and grow.

Once you have acknowledged how you feel, you need to consider whether the time frame you set yourself was unrealistic rather than the task itself. We are often too impatient for things to happen - we hate to wait for the things we want the most. We usually believe that events should be happening more quickly than they really are and so it's easy for discouragement to set in. You must remind yourself that no goal is unrealistic, only the time frames we set ourselves. So, allow your discouragement, once you have acknowledged it, to disperse. Don't let it become a fixation and dent your confidence and drive. Simply allow it to come and then fade.

Next you need to look over the actions you have taken to try to accomplish your goals. You may simply need to give them more time, or perhaps you need to try different methods and approaches. It is crucial that you do not give up on your goal. All that is required is to reconsider your actions, think of other possibilities to help you achieve your goals. Do not allow doubts to creep in. You need to always believe that your goal is achievable and that it is impossible to fail. If you keep repeating this affirmation to yourself, you will soon feel a sense of great safety and comfort and know without any doubt that your goal will happen in time.

It is important to be committed to your goal and show it the respect and effort it deserves. Your sense of motivation will also help you deal with discouragement. Clearly identifying your goals will make them easier to achieve, so give yourself time to think about what you truly want and also give yourself time to believe unconditionally in its fruition and success.
