Positive Mental Attitude
By:kr

Your attitude toward yourself, other people and the world in general will have a profound impact on how effectively you are able to dominate your life. Although it might sound a tad predictable, a positive mental attitude is much more preferable than a negative one, and as long as you make life decisions based on objectivity and rational thinking, a positive attitude has no discernable downside.

Having a positive mental attitude does not mean lying to yourself about reality but looking for the positive aspects of whatever situation you find yourself in. For example, let’s say that you consider yourself to have ‘a terrible job’. In this case there might well be aspects of the job that you don’t like, but actually describing it as a terrible job won’t make you feel particularly good, so look for something that is positive about the situation. You might then tell yourself that you have a job that is helping you to develop more resilience and patience – both good qualities that will serve you well in the future.

Now I’m not suggesting that you use a positive mental attitude just so that you can settle into your comfort zone and be content to stagnate. I don’t believe that stagnation is either desirable or necessary. However, I do believe that feeling good about yourself and the world will enable you to get better results in life than you would be focusing on the negative aspects.

Everyone can view their situation as being positive or negative. A person in an extremely challenging situation, such as someone who is suffering from a long-term illness, can choose to focus on the inner strength that they are developing as a result. Indeed, many seriously ill and disadvantaged people learn to develop a remarkably positive way of coping. At the same time, even people who seem to have a dream life can choose to focus on the sore points. Consider the movie star who suddenly resents all the attention that he receives, or the multi-millionaire who is worried that people only like him because of his money.

The point here is that all of us can find reasons to be either positive or negative, so why not choose to be one of the people who decide to be positive? A positive mental attitude has long been associated with all types of success and happiness, so it makes sense to take that traditional pattern and make it your own. Try finding something in your life to feel positive about several times every day for the next 30 days and you’ll soon discover that a positive mental attitude is much better than torturing yourself with a negative one.
