Stuck in a Rut - 2 Common Causes That Can Keep You There
By:Anthony D Carter

Unwilling to Change.

When you have an opportunity presented to you and you refuse to change in order to receive it then you put limits on yourself. A good example would be a person who is stuck in a dead-end job that they hate. This person is offered a high paying job that promises a promotion and greater chances for advancement. When they decide to pass on the job offer because they don't want to move out of their home town because it has sentimental value to them. That person has put self-imposed limits on themselves. I am not saying they are wrong or right but the fact remains they have limited their advancement and they did by choice. If you are unwilling to change then you automatically put limits on your ability to get out of a rut.

Solution: Decide what you want more. Is it comfort or is it advancement. Explore the possibilities available to you and honestly weigh your options. Look at the pros and cons that surround the opportunity. If the positives out number the negatives then all signs point to go. If the opposite applies then this is not a true opportunity for you. Make your decisions based on the your desire to leave the status quo for a better situation.

Association.

The people who you spend time with can help you or hold you back. If you associate with people who are happy just getting by then you will tend to be the same way. When you decide to do something more with your life many of these people will ridicule you and put you down. They will tell you all of the reasons why you cannot change. If you continue to hang around them you will second guess your decision to fight to get out of your rut. There is a strong tendency to drift back to your comfort zone to be more like the people you are surrounding yourself with.

Solution: Change your associations and you will change your life. Spend time with people who stretch you. Befriend people who are in life where you desire to be. Also only take advice from people who you respect. If someone is a true friend they will support you when you try to better yourself. If a person puts you down for trying to succeed then they are not your friend. That is a person you do not need to be spending time with.
