Motivation Tips - How to Defeat Procrastination
By:Anthony D Carter

The two rules of procrastination: 1) Do it today. 2) Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. ~Author Unknown

Do you find yourself putting off important task? We all have felt that way at one time or another in our lives. Procrastination presents a huge problem. We know what needs to be done yet we don't do it and with each passing day the task left undone becomes more important.

Mild Procrastination-I'll Do It Later.

Example: Wash the dishes.

What to do: Do the least desirable task first. After you do the hardest one it's all downhill from there. You gain momentum with each task that you get done. Your attitude improves. You begin to see more benefits in doing what needs to be done than you do in putting things off.

Moderate Procrastination-I'll Get to It Tomorrow.

Example: Call my mom. I haven't called her in weeks.

What to do: As soon as you say that stop and go call. If it is not possible for you to do so at that time then make a mental or written reminder to call her right after you finish what you are doing. Train yourself to be action oriented. Rather than being passive take a proactive stance with this habit so that you can break it. Not only are you breaking the procrastination habit but you are also replacing it with a positive one in the process.

Severe Procrastination-Someday I'll Get Around to It.

Example: Lose Weight.

What to do: Look at your current situation and honestly assess the negative effects that procrastination have had on you. Now think in terms of possibilities. What can you do if you would change. Write down some of the things that you could do, become or have as a result of eliminating procrastination from your life? After you finish writing those things down write a list of what you can do to obtain what is on your list. Now, here is the biggest tip: Start today doing what it takes to have what you really want and never postpone any of your work to another day.
