How to Multiply Fractions

How to Multiply Fractions

If you have mastered adding and subtracting fractions, often multiplying fractions will seem a lot less complicated. Many of the steps feel similar, but much of the work associated with common denominators is gone. However, multiplying fractions will put your reducing skills to the test! If you need help

To multiply fractions, first convert any mixed fractions to improper fractions. Then, multiply the numerators across to get the answer numerator. Do the same thing for the denominators, multiplying the two values across to get the answer fraction's denominator. Reduce, and if the answer is improper, turn it into a mixed fraction.

The worksheets on this page http://www.dadsworksheets.com/worksheets/fraction-multiplication.html have various types of practice for multiplying fractions. Included are problems that focus on cross-cancelling which is a skill that greatly simplifies the process of reducing fractions in the answer step. Cross cancelling prior to multiplying fractions results in much smaller products which are significantly easier to reduce and turn into proper fractions.

Memorizing the multiplication table is one of the most important math skills we can teach our kids. Without times table mastery, more advanced math topics are infinitely more challenging.
