Listening - ESL lesson
By:franklin johnson erowe <babylourds2004@yahoo.com>

Of the four language skills, listening has been sadly neglected. students develop a certain degree
of proficiency in reading, writing and speaking but not in listening.
Their listening comprehension usually lags behind . They lack the ability to comprehend the spoken language.
Why? because many classrooms are still devoted entirely to the exercises in the text book and most,
teachers have little time to prepare additional materials . I n other words , an effort must be made to get the students and the teachers noses out of the text book and into the active learning / teaching process.

Why do people listen :

1. Get information.

2. Engage in social Activities

3. enjoy and Appreciate what they hear.

Stages in a listening activities:

post listening> enrich previously acquired knoweledge and skills.

While listening > this is done when the learners are made to do a task while they listen.
Prelistening> to know the bacground knowledge of the learners.

Two types of listening test:

1 Auditory Discrimination
this type test the ability of the learners to discover the similarities and differences between words

2 . auditory comprehension.- this test the ability of the learners to analyze to comprehend.
factors to be considered in listening.
1 text
2. task
3 channel
4 response mode
5 item type
