Debate
Topic: Common complaints of families with teenagers.
Time: 90 (ninety) minutes
Level: intermediate upper
Objective: The L-s will practice Oral English skills through debate.
Warmer:
Tell to the class some complaints of families with teenagers. Elicit some ideas and have the learners read some letters from the previous class.
Have the learners tell some complaints about their parents to the class and have the whole class to give a good way to talk over the complaints, and give a good way to work it out.
A) Set Debate teams, each team of 10 students and the teams will be with opposite ideas to each other, teams with positive and negative ideas.
B) The two teams will be parents and the other two will be teenagers.
C) Have the teams make a list of 6 complaints about their parents and children.
e.g. parents teenagers
my kid goes out late my parents always tell me what to do
my kid doesn’t like what I say my parents always ask many questions about my privacy
my daughter makes an unusual hairstyle my parents do not let be alone
D When the positive team says the complaint; the team members will be given two minutes to give the positive points about their complaint. When they finish the negative side will say opposite ideas, another two minutes. Teens and parents teams will take turns.
When all the teams are done they will be given some questions.
Questions:
1. What would you do if you were a mother of a daughter who recently got used to smoking?
2. What would you do if you were the father of a son who got used to drinking alcohol drinks and join the gangs?
3. How will you solve the problem if your parents cut off the money for your study, ‘cause of your bad behavior?
4. How to live without complaints?
5. What are the complaints for? Why do you complain?
6. Do you think you always right to complain?
7. Some kids always complain that their parents are always backward, old-fashioned and think in a traditional way. But there are no parents in the world who want their kids to be bad. The only thing they want is to see their kids’ happiness and prosperous life. What do you think, why they give such pressure to their kids?
8. What is the difference between the complaints of teenagers and children?
9.Could you remember your complaints when you were ten-year-old kid?
10. What things make you complain about?
At the end the teenager’s teams will evaluate parents’ work and parent do the teenagers’ work.
They will say their ideas about group participation, brainstorming ideas and co-operation.
