Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Classroom Math Game - Short Lesson
By:Teacher

Students go in teams of 4. The teacher draws a table on the board - one row for each team and three columns. (Eg. If there were 5 groups, there would be 5 rows of 3 boxes). The object of the game is to have the lowest three-digit number in your row. Each turn, the teacher rolls a BIG die, and asks one team a question. If they get it right, they can choose where in the table to put the diceroll number. They can put it in any row or column they like For example, the teacher rolls a 6 and asks "43+48". The kids answer " 91". Then they decide to put the 6 in the first column of another team's row, so that the other team's 3-digit number will be high. This goes on until all the numbers are filled in. It's quite a strategic game but I've seen it used with a low set 11-12 year olds.
