Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Use Any Noun Worksheet Or List For These Lessons
By:Renee Goodrich

1) Using All The Nouns - After using a noun worksheet, ask the students to create a story that includes all the nouns. The challenge is to use them logically and without placing them in a long list.

2) Finding Adjectives - Ask your students to write each noun from the worksheet on to one line of a new page. Next to each noun, write appropriate adjectives until the line is full (cat- soft, fluffy, angry, sleepy, patchy). This could involve a competition. The students score 1 point for each adjective, 2 points for any adjectives longer than 6 letters and 3 points for an adjective that no-one else has used.

3) Noun Star - On a blank piece of paper, students write each noun from the worksheet, leaving some space around it. Draw 5 lines around the word in a star shape. Students then write 5 nouns that relate to the noun at the center (eg fish-fin,eyes,scales,mouth, gills). This activity works well in small groups. Large sheets of paper and colored markers make it more fun. If the students add pictures to the words, the sheets can be used in a classroom display

You can also use your own list of nouns to explore words connected with a specific subject. Each group could focus on a different set of nouns. These sheets can then be used in later lessons as prompters for writing activities.

4) Noun Shopping - Students write short classified ads for each noun on the worksheet. Each advertisement should include a detailed description, an explanation of its possible uses and a price. Here is an example. For Sale - a 30 cm (12 inch) long green cucumber with crisp center that can be used in salads or in sandwiches. $1.20

5) Noun Wall - Give each student one of the nouns on the worksheet or from your noun list. Students are to write the word in fancy letters. Each noun can then be placed on a classroom word wall. This works well if you control the size of the words. You can do this by folding an A4 piece of paper into half and then half again (top folds down to the bottom). Give each child or pairs one of these strips and tell them that the word must fill all of it. Students can write the word in thick rainbow colors, spotty bubble letters or any other way they decide. The challenge is to make the word decorative but keep it clear so that it can still be read. If your students are really clever, they could choose a design that connects with the word. For example, fish could be covered in scales or carrot could be written with carrots. Some students may need a bubble outline of the word to get them started.
