Preparation and aids: write target language on board and reveal after introduction,

realia for desk - bag, book,bottle, scarf magazine, watch

sufficient tourist street maps

Stage 1 WARMER ask all students to stand for ‘Simon says’ explain students only do action if Simon says put left arm up/ right hand out/ point behindetc. Anyone doing action without instruction’ Simon says......’ sits down.

Revison of previous lesson T-S 5 mins

Stage 2 INTRODUCTION use realia on desk to revise prepositions. Drill ?s where is the bag/ book etc; can you tell me where the book is?; is the book next to...?

T-S 3 mins

Stage 3.GROUP WORK – ask all students to stand, instruct eg Chloe move forward 3 steps, Dan stand in front of Neil, Liam stand on the left hand side. Ask each student to comment on neighbour using prepositions of place. S-T 5 mins

Stage 4. PAIR WORK – ask each student to write down 2 ?s about location of objects at home, ask partner and give response. S-S 2 mins

Stage 5. PRESENTATION – hand out simple tourist map for everyone, split into groups of 4 and hand out information sheets with 10 statements eg the bank is at the end of St Mary’s Gate, next to the bistro; is the cinema behind the restaurant, on the right hand side of the street etc. Students decide true/ false or yes/ no.

S-S 5 mins
Stage 6 Class – 1 student from each group reads out statement and response is given by member of other group who will then read out next statement etc. Small prize for group with most correct S-S 7 mins

Stage 7. Plenary – errors with pronunciation, get students to self correct, feedback on activity. T-S 2 mins

Stage 8 PRODUCTION –split class into 2 groups. Using same street map ask groups to choose place to hide treasure chest and then write down step by step instructions for trusted friend to locate eg take the first left turn etc
Each group will give directions to the other. Students may ask ?s and have 3 guesses at the location. S- S 15 mins

Stage 9. Homework. Students reply to email from friend who has never visted city but wishes to meet. Decide where to go and give full instructions on how to get to venue. 1 min





Go to another board -
