Music in the Classroom Set-Up Helps in Comprehension Development
By:Tina Sanchez

Input of Music on Children Balances Prep Schools and Helps in Reading and Comprehension

Children, especially those in the introductory level, tend to get distracted easily as their attention span only stretches to a couple of hours or so. Different teaching methods and strategies have been incorporated into the classroom set-up to prolong and manage this behavior; and one entertaining and effective approach is through music introduction.

In a traditional classroom set-up, improving a child's comprehension is executed through storytelling and reading that are supplemented with different visuals. Print posters in full color are used as pointers for children to recognize and link certain images to the text they are reading. Sight words are also very popular to fully develop vocabulary; and regularly for preparatory schools, poster printing of these materials is important as this traditional strategy helps build literacy and fluency in decoding the written text in storybooks and textbooks. Yet as teaching strategies are now catching up with the times, teachers and reading coaches are now open to incorporating music as a learning tool.

Music for children is now supplied hand-in-hand with educational books; school administrations have seen that the effectiveness of enhancing lessons with melodies makes learning more productive, fun and interesting for children.

1. Increases Memory Retention: Music is pleasing to the ear that children in early development stage react positively to different melodies. A storybook sung to children makes these eager learners naturally follow the beat and at the same time better remember the written text. Also, repetitive tunes is one strategy of programming children to get used to the language, phonics, and content supplied in their lessons; in the long run, singing of lectures leads to full comprehension of the book.

2. Increases attention: One of the barriers in learning is the loss of focus children have within a certain amount of time, especially in school. As children have different levels of attention span, through music, boundaries are set straight as respective time frames are provided; and children are defocused on the common notion that books are for school, thus boring.

3. Positivity: Music accompaniments in the classroom emit a positive way in learning. As music for young ones are usually performed with hand and feet movements, continuous body movements gets kids anticipated for their song and dance number. The music livens up their mood that keeps them inspired and motivated during their lesson.

Even as children come to a more knowledgeable stage, music can still supplement them in the field of learning. Since their familiarity with music has been developed at a very young age, they can easily develop strategies on their own to make melodies advantageous for them in any aspect of their lives.
