EFL Kids Walking/Action Game for Korean Kids - ESL Teacher Robin Day Lessons
By:Robin Tim Day B.Sc., M.Sc., B.Ed. <cowboy4444@hotmail.com>

WALKING GAME

Children need to move and burn off energy so we do this game often while using many action verbs and many nouns. Do this in the last 5 minutes of the class and the then the kids can leave the room on a high note. They will love to come back the next day. You may get complaints from adjacent classes as it is quite a noisy game. Take it outdoors if you like.

We start walking inline around the classroom once the chairs have been tucked under the table. I say "Walking" and the children repeat after me ("da-da-ha-say-yo" in Korean). Then I start to vary the verb forms and the verbs. Teacher needs to call out the key Korean words too as small children don't have a very big English vocabulary but they learn quickly from teacher's body language, the English and Korean words and from their classmates.

Children will play this day after day and they learn lots of basic vocabulary effortlessly. You can do sporting verbs and nouns too: golfing, hitting, shooting, baseball etc. Sometimes we make a bridge with chairs or two children, as an obstruction, and I call out the positions OVER or UNDER again and again. The bridge children like to catch one of the walking children when their arms come down, then they switch roles. This game is always a hit and can be used for small or large groups.
