How to Practice Parts of the Body in ESL
By:Lane Cummings

When it comes to learning English as a Second Language (ESL), having your students build a strong and consistent vocabulary is essential. Students can easily become overwhelmed by all the vocabulary they have to learn; one way to minimize that feeling is by teaching words in groups. This method also helps vocabulary to be more memorable. For example, dedicating an entire lesson to parts of the body in an unforgettable fashion will allow students to use these terms more quickly and will give students confidence when speaking. After you've acquainted them with these words, consistent practice is essential.

Model Pictures

Ask students to bring in pictures or male and female models brought in from fashion magazines. Have all the students hand in their photos to you.

Redistribute the pictures randomly in class. Ask each student to bring one of their new pictures to the front of the room.

Ask students to hold their picture up and explain what they see, using mostly vocabulary for parts of the body. For example, one student could say, "This is a picture of woman with long legs, long arms, a long torso, short hair, and a long neck. She has bracelets on her wrists and high boots cover her feet and ankles. She carries a bag on her shoulder." Ask students to help each other if anyone gets stuck.

Apple Game

Ask students to stand in a circle. Hold out an apple.

Ask students to pass the apple from one to another, balancing the apple on different body parts. For example, one student could balance the apple on his shoulder. Another student could balance the apple on her knee, head, leg, foot, wrist, back or other body part.

Ask students to shout out the body part that they see their fellow student balancing the apple upon. Correct or help students as needed.
