How to Teach Math to ESL Kids
By:Zachary Nguyen

Teachers are often required to teach an array of subjects to students in elementary, middle and high school. The process of teaching any subject to kids can be tough as it can be a difficult, time-consuming process. Teaching the same subjects to ESL kids can be overwhelmingly challenging due to the language barrier. However, teaching universal subjects such as math may be much easier than it seems by using logical techniques and familiar concepts.

Use money concepts to teach math. Much of life involves using money. For example, kids often buy snacks at an ice cream truck or purchase food during their lunch hour. Implement this into a lesson to familiarize the children with concepts they already know. This can be both helpful in teaching and fun for students to learn, and it is not restricted by a language barrier.

Cook simple snacks and ask the kids to help. Measurements and accuracy are two fields that can be practiced by learning what a cup of flour, two tablespoons of sugar and three eggs can make. Kids can enjoy counting and delicious snacks at the same time.

Play simple card games like mix-and-match (one card contains a number and another contains the word corresponding to that). It both increases their math skills as well as their words recognition ability.

Display shapes (triangle, square, trapezoid, etc.) on the board and teach kids to recognize them. Use different colors to help kids learn both geometry and colors at the same time.
