ESL Spelling Games
By:Michelle Clark

Students who are studying English as a Second Language will benefit from a variety of games and educational experiences. Choose task-based games and games that focus on instant reading and spelling abilities.

Corrections
For a corrections activity, write spelling words on a set of note cards. Separate students into groups of two or three. Give each group some note cards with misspelled words that are being studied, plus paper and a pencil. Encourage students to correct the misspelled words by writing the correct spellings on their paper. When each group is finished, ask them to take turns spelling out the corrected words and write them on the board. If any words are still misspelled, ask the class to spell the words together out loud.

Crossword Puzzles
With a spelling list or group of words being studied, use an online crossword puzzle generator to create a practice crossword puzzle. Print a copy for each student and encourage students to work on the puzzles in class or as homework.

Newspaper Hunt
For a newspaper hunt, give students a highlighter and a newspaper in the target language. Write a spelling word on the board that has a suffix or a prefix, and underline the suffix or prefix. Ask the students to highlight words on the page that have the same suffix or prefix. Once students have gone through their news page, ask students to read aloud the words they found and write them on the board while underlining the suffix or prefix.

Depictions
Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil. Choose a student to come to the blackboard or other large writing surface, and ask him to draw a picture showing a specific spelling word. The other students must write what word they think the picture is. The winner for the round must call out that he has it, then spell the word out loud and show he has written it.
