Reading Comprehension Activities for ESL Students
By:Tonya Yirka

When working with ESL (English as a second language) adult students, remember that they are probably proficient in their native language and can read in that language as well. Therefore, they have mastered one language and can intellectually master English. Activities for reading comprehension need to be practical, intelligent, interesting and, hopefully, enjoyable.

Recipes
Simple recipes are always a hit with an ESL class. After explaining and showing some of the simple measurements, give each group labeled items that are to be used in the recipe, the ingredients also labeled to be used and a simple list of instructions. Keep the instructions short and give plenty of time for the groups to complete the task. Be sure to leave time at the end of the class for eating.

Treasure Hunt
Before class, affix slips of paper to places around the room, e.g. under desks, in drawers, under chairs, etc. describing where other slips can be found. Have the class pair up and explain that they are going on a hunt. Give each pair of students a card with a simple clue printed on it, describing the place where the next clue can be found. Start each pair at a different place in the room, have them read the card and find the hidden slips, one by one. As they find each slip have them write their names on the slip and put it back for the next group to find. When the couples have found all the slips, they return to their seats.

State Driver's Manual
Rewrite the state driver's manual--not all of it, just the simple rules and regulations. Use large enough type that it is easy to read. Again, to ease any tension or frustration, have the students pair up and give each pair a simple list of questions about driving. Have them write their answers, preferable in English on lined paper and discuss their answers with the teacher and the other students at the end of the class, again preferably in English.

Art Project
Choose a simple art project such as constructing an American flag. Have the materials at hand and a list of simple instructions for each person. If the class is new, pairing the students up will help them have more confidence. Keep the instructions simple but make sure to have enough steps to keep the class interested. Be sure to allow enough time for the project to be completed easily. Have a set of pictures of some of the words from the instructions with the identifying words beneath them to get the class started. For example, a picture of stars, a picture of stripes and the color blue with the appropriate word underneath might help.
