Teaching English to non-native speakers requires substantial preparation. Some beginning teachers may find it necessary to become certified and learn ESL teaching methods from professionals while others may learn better through experience. In either case, teachers should identify learning objectives before each lesson begins and determine whether those objectives have been met at the end of the lesson. In order to increase a lesson's effectiveness, successful teachers may employ learning aids such as films and articles.

Learn about ESL pedagogy. Before you can expect to be a proficient teacher of ESL, you need to learn about effective teaching strategies as well as refreshing your knowledge of English grammar. Some teachers find it more helpful (and the chances of finding a job increases) if you receive certification.

Develop a lesson plan. A lesson plan should ideally revolve around at least one grammatical principle or aspect of English (modal verbs, articles, pronunciation). The objective of the lesson is for each student to have a better grasp of the concepts and be capable of using them correctly.

Use a wide range of teaching aids and resources. Depending on the age level of your students, employ texts, videos and games in the classroom to liven up the lesson. Such interactive methods as having students discuss and write responses to texts or films allow them to improve multiple skills, plus increasing their level of enjoyment.

Allow your students to do the speaking. Remind yourself that they are the ones learning a new language and the more they practice, the quicker they will learn. An effective ESL teacher asks questions which pique the students' interests and promote lengthy classroom conversations.

Remind yourself to be patient. Maintaining patience with your students during the lesson encourages them to be uninhibited at speaking and more confident learners.
