Five Senses Exercises for ESL
By:Emily Corfe

If you teach children or adults English as a second language, you can help them connect with each of the five senses and the correct English vocabulary by using fun-filled games and exercises. If you use activities that liven up the lesson and inspire students to participate, they'll learn while having fun, too.

Flashcard Quiz
Use flashcards for a visual presentation of each sense, stating clearly in English what each sense is used for. For example, show the class a large picture of a nose, then a flower, and clearly say, "The nose is used for smelling flowers." Other picture-sentence examples: "The mouth is used for tasting bananas" and "The ears are used for hearing a piano." Follow the exercise with a simple fill-in-the-blank quiz.

"Simon Says"
Play a modified game of "Simon Says" to help students remember each sense. For example, say "Simon says touch your nose," followed by "Simon says smell a flower" and "Simon says taste a chocolate bar" and "Simon says listen to music." Ask students to act out each phrase. Before the start of the game, provide each student with props like flowers and chocolate bars to use as directed within the game.

Scrambled Phrases
Write several phrases concerning the use of each sense. For example "I listen to the sound of the sea with my ears," or "I hear the siren with my ears." Cut out each word and ask students to rearrange the separate words to create the correct sentence. This can also be done at the front of class using the chalkboard. Write each word separately and pick a student to come to the front of the class to create the phrase. Reward students with points and give the student who earns the most points a prize.

Memory
Engage students with a fun memory game. Sit together in a circle. The first student must say a phrase concerning one of the five senses, for example "I see the sea." The next student must repeat what the first student said, "He sees the sea," and add a phrase of his own such as, "I hear the waves." The third student must repeat what the first two students said, for example, "He sees the sea, she hears the waves," and add one of her own, such as, "I taste an ice cream." The first student to forget a phrase is out of the game, and the last student to remember all phrases correctly is the winner.
