Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

ESL Resources and Games
By:River Lin

Because English as a Second Language (ESL) is taught and studied all over the world, sometimes in remote areas with limited resources, many teachers and students turn to the Internet for their ESL needs. Resources include articles, lesson plans and ideas, and materials to download and print for students to use. Resources are available for both teachers and students. Games are effective ESL classroom activities, so many teachers look for games online that they can use as is, or adapt to fit their specific needs.

ESL Resource Center
The ESL Resource Center is aimed at teachers. With a brief introduction about teaching and a teacher development section, the site offers ideas, activities, and tips for meeting the four main areas of ESL: reading, writing, listening and speaking. There are also links to more resources on the site to address particular learner needs such as pronunciation and autonomy. Finally, this site has specific categories for teachers who teach specialized English including for English for business, young learners, and beginners.

Lanternfish
Lanternfish is primarily a resource site where teachers can get materials to supplement their lessons or complete, stand-alone lesson plans with the necessary handouts, worksheets, or quizzes. Many of the resources available on Lanternfish are designed to help students function in real-life situations in English-dominant countries such as common expressions used in a doctor's office or going to the bank. Lanternfish also offers resources for content-based ESL such as a monthly online magazine about science. The Lanternfish site provides many resources aimed at the mechanics of English such as hypothetical speech, specialized writing skills, and irregular past-tense verbs. Finally, Lanternfish has a few games that teachers can use with all ESL students, especially younger students.
