Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

ESL Activities in the Regular Classroom
By:Lindsay Pietroluongo

When teaching ESL -- English as a second language -- to students who have been integrated in a traditional classroom, be culturally sensitive. A teacher's job is to provide language instruction to ESL students without discriminating against them. ESL students may be in a class with other ESL students who are more advanced. Ask parents to help in the classroom and get involved in classroom activities.

Writing and Presentations
Ask students to prepare an autobiographical essay or oral presentation. This is a great way for students to explore their cultural backgrounds and educate the teacher and classmates. Combining an autobiographical essay with an oral presentation will help students to write in English and become comfortable speaking the language. Have students participate in talent shows that showcase culturally different talents.

Reading
Reading out loud is a common strategy when teaching students of all kinds, including native-English speakers and ESL students. Even reading at a comprehension level that's slightly above your students' level is beneficial. Students will still be able to grasp much of the content and they'll expand their vocabulary. They'll also improve their listening and speaking skills. By hearing quality writing, students will learn how proper English sounds, which will help them improve both their own writing and speaking.

Holidays and Events
Prepare a lesson that compares and contrasts the holidays of different cultures. Combine lessons and education with celebrating by having a themed classroom party. Start a class discussion about worldwide current events and encourage students to participate and present their views.

Cultural Information
Gather information about the culture and customs of ESL students, and include this information in lesson plans. This will help ESL students feel that they're an important addition to the classroom, and their classmates will better understand the differences among the student body. Teachers should understand cultural differences, such as cultures that make or don't make eye contact, or specific gestures that are either accepted or shunned. Provide ESL students with an orientation about local behaviors and customs so that they understand social norms in America.
