Students who are learning English as a second language, or ESL students, can have some struggles when studying in school. The students are not only learning about the topics teachers are going over in class, but they are also learning to speak and understand the English language. Teachers must assign writing activities to students taking fourth grade ESL classes to help the students learn English skills and improve their overall educational experience.

Worksheet Activities
Worksheets can range from fill in the blank to fixing mistakes on the page. At the fourth grade ESL level, the students should have enough foundation in English to start working on simple fill in the blanks, correction or even spelling worksheets in English. This will not only improve reading skills, but also English skills and writing skills.

Creative Writing
Students at the 4th grade level are ready to start putting ideas into words and writing them down. While students in an ESL program might not have the same vocabulary and wording as students in the regular programs, they can benefit from creative writing assignments as well. Teachers tell the students to write about any topic, such as the uses of a potato or possibilities of a potato, and then give the students time to write about the topic. The students can write anything they want, and it allows teachers to evaluate where the students need improvement and where they are doing well.

Writing a Paragraph
Fourth grade students are at an age where the simple sentences need to start forming paragraphs. ESL students also need to know about paragraphs and learn how to form the paragraphs. Teachers should show the students how a paragraph forms from sentences that are related and then have the students write their own paragraphs.

Flash Card Making
Students learning English as a second language can benefit from the use of flash cards to learn new vocabulary and the meanings of words in English. The teacher can have the students form their own flash cards and then correct the English spellings and terms, so the students learn where they have spelling errors or sentence mistakes if working on sentences. The students can then study from the flash cards.
