The Best ESL Grammar Lessons
By:James Stuart

Grammar is an important part of any language, as it forms the rules for usage. If a student doesn't have a strong grasp of English grammar, his comprehension and output might not be as strong as possible. For a native speaker, who might not recall the name of many grammatical terms, teaching English grammar can be difficult. Fortunately, there are a number of resources online that can help both students and teachers get through grammar lessons.

Adjectives, Adverbs, Verbs and Nouns
For beginner students, learning the basic mechanics of English is important. Teach the differences among these four basic categories separately from particles, or function words, such as "the" or "of." Once students are familiar with these simple components, you will be able to teach more complex grammatical structures. The Super Teacher Worksheets website has a number of excellent worksheets that you can use in your lessons. They will help students learn the four main parts of speech and practice using them.

Past, Present and Future Tenses
In English, changing the tense of the verb will give the sentence a different time-specific meaning. Beginner students will need to master simple past, present and future tenses. Once students understand these basic principles, they can move on to more complex structures such as past perfect or future continuous. The English Tenses With Cartoons website is an excellent resource that students can use in and out of the classroom. Students can learn simple and complex tense structures through entertaining cartoons and then practice what they have learned.

Prepositions and Articles
While ESL students may master other aspects of English relatively easily, they may continue to encounter difficulty with prepositions and articles even at an advanced level. Many foreign languages do not have articles such as "the" or "a"; knowing when to use prepositions such as "in" or "at" can be confusing. ESLPlans.com is a teaching resource that allows teachers to register and share different teaching plans. The site has a number of great lesson plans for teaching prepositions and articles for download and use.

Other Grammar Lessons
There are a number of different grammar structures that will need covering in the ESL classroom. Knowing the difference between a gerund and a modal, for example, can be difficult for a teacher, let alone a student. Dave's ESL Cafe is a popular language teaching resource. This website has a number of detailed lesson plans that are available for free. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the site's extensive listings and find a plan that suits the needs of your students.
