ESL Activities: About Schools
By:Kristle Jones

Create fun and engaging ESL activities about school. ESL activities are one of the keys to successful language learning. Make the activities relevant to things that the students do and see on a daily basis (school) to create relativity to the students' interests. According to the TESOL Zone website, activities such as reading for pleasure are one of the most powerful ways you can learn a language.

School Subjects
Teach ESL students about subjects that they may study at school. This matching exercise is perfect to introduce or reinforce vocabulary words about school. Have students match like items. For example, on one side of the worksheet, list school subjects such as math, science, English, music and history. On the opposite side of the sheet, write simple descriptions of each subject such as "learn about the past" for "history." Children can draw a line to each match.

ESL Writing Exercise
The ESL Galaxy website suggests giving students practice with English grammar through writing exercises about school. Students can practice writing about what they do at school. Have students write about who their best friend at school is, what their favorite subject in school is or what extracurricular activities, such as sports, they enjoy.

Classroom Objects Fill-in-the-Blank
A fill-in the blank exercise about classroom objects helps ESL students practice new vocabulary words about things they use daily at school. Give out pictures of everyday classroom objects such as erasers, pencils, desks and computers with the word underneath. The catch is that a few letters should be missing from each word. This is where the students will fill in the blank.

Role Play
This activity is ideal for ESL students to practice their oral communications skills in English. Have students break off into small groups and pick one to be the teacher and the rest can be students. Have the "teachers" choose a word to teach their "students." Each group can have their own word/sentence or you can choose one for all of them to use. The teachers can then go over proper spelling and definitions for their chosen "lesson."
