How to Teach ESL Songs - A Guide For TEFL Teachers
By:Mark Aubrey

tudents really enjoy singing and songs are a fun way for them to learn new vocabulary and practice using the language. This article offers some tips on how you can use songs in your class to improve your students English.

How do songs help students to learn?

Repetition - When learning songs, students are repeating grammar structures and vocabulary which helps them to remember word patterns and increase their vocabulary.

Songs are infectious and they will continue repeating the song after they finish the lesson.

Listening - To learn a song students have to use their listening skills. This activity will improve their ability to hear words and sentences. Their comprehension will also increase as they analyse the meaning of the song.

Technique - It is a good idea to introduce as many learning techniques as you can to your students as some learn best through listening and others seeing etc. This will be of benefit to those who learn best through sound.

Motivation - Making the lessons fun will motivate your students to learn. Singing is enjoyable and will increase the students interest in the language.

Interaction - Singing songs will encourage the quieter students to participate.
How to teach using songs?

Vocabulary - First teach the students the key words in the song followed by the essential grammar points.

Actions - Teach students actions to go with the song.

Parts - Teach the song in verses rather than all of it at one time. Students can pick the song up over a few periods rather than trying to absorb it all during one sitting.

Appropriate - Choose songs that are not too fast or difficult for the students. Make sure the songs are about things that the students can relate to.

Worksheets - These are an excellent way to test the students comprehension. They can fill in missing words from the lyrics and answer questions about the meaning of the songs.
