English Teaching Tips for ESL or EFL Teachers
By:Nevin Tracy

A native English speaker may be the particularly favorable natural conditions to be an ESL or EFL teacher, but it is still far from enough. Besides the formal training, there are some tips the ESL and EFL teachers should pay great attention to.

Have a good command of grammar knowledge
Of course, as a native speaker, you can speak and write smoothly. But sometimes, you know, knowing these grammar rules is one thing, but how to explain them to others is a totally different thing. Therefore, if you are preparing to teach English overseas or teach English online for non-native speakers, investing in a good grammar guide or attending relevant course is of great necessity.

Keep it simple and understandable
As you know, just a small verb word may have many means and rules, and it may be easy for you, but for those language learners, it always makes them confused. So focus on one at a time. Once they understand this point, you can move to the next one.
Speak slowly and clearly

The English learners may be envy to the native English speakers speaking quickly and fluently and eager to reach such level, but few of them can follow what you are saying at the beginning. So while teaching, try to use words, vocabulary your student are familiar with, and keep your voice slowly and clearly.

Appropriately use idioms and slang
Idiom and slang are of great difficulties for non-native speakers to understand, but most of them still want to learn some as well as their background. Appropriately using idiom and slang may make your teaching time more active, but still not give the ESL learners a tough time understanding these peculiar word combinations.
