Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Bringing The Game of Bingo to The Classroom
By:Drake Crossland

Bingo is a game of chance that has been played by young and old for years. The object of a standard game of Bingo is to get five numbers in a row. The first one to accomplish this wins a prize. Typically this game is played for money, and each successive game brings an ever larger reward, but Bingo has far more uses than just as an added income.

Bingo has also been commonly used in some classrooms as a teaching aid for over 200 years. You can make any learning exercise fun by making it into a bingo game, and its very easy to do. You can take a science lesson about dinosaurs, write a short description of each dinosaur on your 'bingo markers', then write the corresponding dinosaur on your 'bingo card'. This would work as well for a history lesson on any number of topics. You could even switch it around and put important historical facts on the card, and the event they describe on the markers.

For parents, this is a convenient and fun way to give your child an extra boost in a subject that they may be having trouble with. You could even use dry erase boards for the bingo cards so that you can switch between subjects easily. This is also a good way to help your child learn other things, such as multiplication tables, or even Bible verses. There is no end to the things your child can learn when they stop seeing it as work and start seeing it as fun.

Many adult classrooms also benefit from the use of Bingo as a teaching aid. As we all know, there is no harder language to learn than the English language, and many Spanish to English teachers have found Bingo games invaluable to their adult students. Spelling and vocabulary, grammar and even elocution can be learned in this way, and hey, even adult students like to have fun.

For head start classes and preschoolers, specially designed games of Bingo would also be a great benefit. There is not much that you could not teach by using a 'Bingo" game. Personal hygiene, social skills such as sharing and playing nice; for toddlers it would be a great start. Teaching them colors and shapes would be a breeze, you could even design a game to learn animals and their sounds. Using this method to teach the English alphabet would be beneficial for children as well as adults, but you could also use it to teach Spanish to both young children and adults.

Far from the stigma of Bingo being a game for old people, this game has many and varied useful purposes. Of course, if you want to play Bingo for money there are many commercial bingo halls, not to mention the American Legion, where you can pay to play and win. As a learning tool, however, it is useful, gratifying, and even the very young have the chance to shout "BINGO".
