Ideas to Teach English Vocabulary & Grammar
By:Lucy Natek

People build up their grammar and vocabulary skills through a wide range of combined methods: reading, watching television, listening to music or using the Internet. When learning a new language it's important to understand its natural flow. New words are picked up the easiest when using a language in an natural setting. However, beginner students of a language and children have to be introduced to the basics of the language. There are a lot of ways you can bring learning vocabulary and grammar close to your students.

Playing Games
Learning vocabulary can go beyond tedious repetition of words written in a notebook. There are a lot of existing vocabulary-building games you can play with your students. For example, a very simple game is a game of connections in which somebody comes up with a word and the other student comes up with a word that begins with the last letter of that word.

Another good game is a game of associations. Start with a word, ask the students what that word reminds them of and to explain why. Thinking about words and connecting them to familiar things in their lives will help your students remember the words.

Show and Tell
Encourage your students to bring an object to school and present it to the class. Ask them to describe the object in as much detail as possible. If they have problems with presenting, guide them through with a series of questions about the object. Ask them what the object means to them, where they got it and why is it important. This is a good way for students to think about adjectives and to form sentences, which will help their grammar skills.

Reading Assignments
Reading is one of the best ways to learn a language. When reading a book, students will learn new words in context as well as gain an understanding of how the language flows and how grammar is used. Encourage them to underline words they don't understand and talk about those words in class. Use sentences from a book to explain grammar. After the reading assignment is done, have your students write a paper about the reading. Allow them to use their notes and dictionaries when they write as this will encourage them to use the words they learned from the reading assignment as well as new words.

Make Grammar Fun
To speak any language, knowing how to use grammar is imperative. While students tend to find learning grammar particularly boring, try to motivate them by making grammar as fun as much as possible. Write sentences on the board, which have grammar mistakes in them. Go over the mistakes with the students, allowing them to explain what is wrong and how it should be written. The students will both employ their knowledge on the subject, learn how to spot a mistake and correct it.
