While some students can learn effectively through quiet study, others gain the most information through active learning activities. If you are charged with the task of teaching English to a kinesthetic learner, you can increase the effectiveness of the lessons you offer by mixing movement into your learning activities.

Engage students in role play to let them use the language in real-life situations. Give students a situation, such as visiting the grocery store, and act out the interactions that may occur.

Act out scenes that have been read. After reading a fiction or non-fiction passage, ask students to re-create the scene. This not only cements the students' understanding of the text, it also allows you to see that they understood it.

Write vocabulary words on one set of index cards and the definitions on another. Tape the cards containing the words on one wall and the cards with the definitions on the opposite wall. Have students move from wall to wall pairing the cards appropriately.

Toss a ball at a student and ask that student to say the first letter of a spelling word. That student then tosses the ball to another student, who says the next letter in the word, and so on. If a student says the wrong letter, that student is out and he must pass the ball to another player.

Create magazine word stories. Have students clip out words from magazines. After students have collected an assortment of words, ask them to compose stories containing these words, gluing the clippings into the stories as appropriate.
