English Teacher Activities
By:Miranda Morley

In addition to developing fun, engaging activities that will keep students interested, English teachers must interact with parents and assess students. Although these activities create time constraints, engaging and effective English teacher activities can be easy to implement.

Writing Poetry
English teachers can use poetry to teach a wide variety of concepts to any age group or ability level. According to the Poetry Foundation, a recent University of Chicago study concluded that people who read poetry believe the art form contributes to their understanding and enjoyment of life. The study also suggested that poetry readers were more satisfied with their social lives than those who did not read poetry. This suggests that introducing children to poetry early can be very beneficial. Additionally, introducing children to poetry allows English teachers to teach literary techniques, spelling, grammar and interpretation in a more tangible and engaging form. Poetry also is a wonderful introduction to writing. Even students who know only a few English words can arrange them artfully to express themselves and create meaningful poems.

Word Puzzles
According to Deborah Eaton, author of "10-Minute Critical Thinking Activities for English," word puzzles allow students to use logical thinking skills, as well as their knowledge of language rules to solve word problems. Word puzzles also introduce students to new vocabulary words, and some word puzzles, like crosswords, can promote the importance of spelling. Regardless of the type of word puzzle, students will practice problem solving and critical thinking, which are necessary for English students to understand. Crosswords and word search games are just a few word puzzles teachers can give their English students.

Plays
If your students read about Romeo and Juliet, they're likely to forget about the characters and plot when they finish the last page. However, if your students actually take on the roles of Romeo, Juliet and others in the play, they will be more likely to remember its themes and details. Allowing students to act out portions of the literary works they must read makes the works come alive. Not only are the students engaged in the work, but they also can have fun during English class, which can encourage a love of literature and learning.
