How to Teach English to a Korean Child
By:Rossana Coscolluela

Teaching English to non-English speakers such as Koreans may seem like a challenging and difficult task. It requires a lot of patience, understanding and perseverance. If you are an ESL teacher, you need to come up with activities to effectively teach English to Korean children. Kids have short attention spans so you must think of interesting ways to teach English and keep them focused at the same time. With the right activities and exercises, Korean children will be able to learn basic English in no time.

Use flashcards to teach Korean first graders the English alphabet. Show one flashcard at a time and let children repeat the sound of the letter. Most flashcards have pictures that go with the sound of the letter. Say the name of the picture and let the children repeat. Clearly pronounce and enunciate the words and sounds.

Make children listen to children's songs in English such as nursery rhymes. Songs are easier to memorize because the words are constantly repeated throughout the entire song. You will be surprised that most Korean children may already be familiar with Christmas and birthday songs. Sing with them and come up with actions for the song to make learning more interesting.

Prepare simple role-playing activities for kids. Children love it when they are able to create their own make-believe world. This activity is good for improving children's conversational skills. The use of everyday expressions in conversation such as "How are you today?" or "Let's go home" should be repeated regularly. Provide simple scenarios like going to the zoo, attending a birthday party or answering the phone and center the conversion around those settings.

Make use of online resources to stimulate the minds of children. There are interactive activities, games and stories that you can use as resources to teach English in class. Also, you can assign homework such as creating a document with their personal information, name, age, address, parent's name, hobbies and so on. This activity will help them improve their spelling, comprehension and vocabulary.
