Writing About the Seasons for First Grade
By:Jennifer VanBaren

Elementary students often learn about the four different seasons and the characteristics of each. First-grade students are generally just beginning to learn how to write and many first-grade teachers require the students to keep a journal of all of their writing activities. The teacher may assign various entries throughout the school year about different aspects of the seasons.

Favorite Season
Teachers often ask first-graders to write a journal entry about their favorite season. The students must then choose whether they prefer spring, summer, fall or winter and tell why. The students write the name of the season at the top of the page, or teachers can hand out sheets that say "My Favorite Season is" followed by a blank allowing the children to complete the blank line with their favorite season. Students should explain in one sentence why they chose this season. Their explanation could be based on the weather, a favorite activity or a holiday that takes place at that time of year.

Weather in Each Season
For this writing activity, teachers ask students to write a sentence about normal weather conditions during each season. For example, if the teacher assigns spring, the students may write, "It rains a lot in the spring." After the students write one or two sentences, they can then draw a picture to illustrate the weather.

Holidays
Ask students to choose their favorite holiday and write about it. Have the students determine what season that holiday occurs in. For example, a student may write about the Fourth of July by drawing a picture of fireworks exploding in the sky. The student then writes that he likes this holiday and that it occurs during the summer.

Favorite Activity
Teachers can turn this idea into four different assignments throughout the school year. First-grade teachers assign one particular season to the students, such as winter, and ask the students to write what their favorite activity is during that season. The students can also draw a picture of themselves doing the activity. For example, if the teacher assigns the season fall, a student may write a sentence and draw a picture of himself picking apples from a tree.
