2nd Grade Lesson Plan Ideas
By:Tiffany Roget

Various lesson plans are available if you're interested in adding entertaining, educational hands-on activities to your daily routine. Use craft-oriented materials such as markers, stickers and poster board to entice students to want to participate. Introduce young minds to advanced ideas by allowing them to work in teams and integrating fun into their day.

Math--Estimation Station
If you're looking for new lesson plans to teach math skills, Estimation Station is a fun, hands-on activity that fits your needs. You will need a small- to medium-sized fishbowl and a bag of fish-shaped snack crackers. To begin, ask one student to volunteer to come to the front of the class and pour as many crackers into the bowl as she wants.

Next, divide the class into teams or allow kids to play individually and ask each group to guess how many fish crackers they believe are in the bowl. Next, have each group come up and count out the fish in groups of ten. Place the figures up on the board as additional groups add to the total amount. Reward kids with fish crackers from a fresh bag after completing this exercise. Some teachers integrate this with a science lesson about the ocean.

Language Arts--Student-Created Alphabet
When searching for new lesson plans to help students build and improve their language arts skills, including a student-created alphabet offers kids an opportunity to review their understanding of the English alphabet as well as be creative. You will need at least 26 pieces of 7-by-7-inch white paper, 9-by-12-inch multi-colored construction paper, 4-by-4-inch white paper and notebook paper cut to size for a single sentence.

If you have 26 students in your class, each child selects one letter from the alphabet to work with. If you have more than 26 students, you have the choice of either doubling up on a letter or working in pairs. Instruct all participants to write their upper and lowercase letter on the 4-by-4-inch sheet and trace with a marker. Next, draw a picture illustrating a word that starts with that letter on the 7-by-7-inch sheet.

Finally, write a sentence that reflects the illustration. Use the 9-by-12-inch paper to arrange the other pieces. For example, the picture goes in the middle, the letter up near the top and the sentence at the bottom. Make a line on the wall around your classroom with all the letters in proper order.

Science--Weather Maps
Make teaching students about science entertaining and interesting by integrating a lesson plan about weather into your week. Weather Maps is interactive and kids enjoy working as one large group for a significant portion of the lesson. Before starting this activity, go online and print various resources that address the weather. Make these sheets available to students during discussion. You will need five pieces of poster board, each with a drawn outline of the USA, markers and stickers.

Begin by writing questions on the board regarding weather. For example, "Where does weather come from?" "Is weather always the same?" or "How does weather happen?" Next, hold a group dialogue reflective of those answers as well as elements that make up weather like humidity and cloud cover.

Break the class into groups and give each group a poster board, markers and stickers. Ask them to break the country up into areas and mark or draw pictures reflective of the kind of weather they think occurs there and when it happens.
