Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Fun Lessons in Teaching Life Skills
By:Kim Fuller

Life skills are defined by the World Health Organization as "the ability for positive and adaptive behavior that enables a person to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of every day life." Life skills can be taught using fun lessons. If the lessons are enjoyable, their teachings are more likely to be retained.

School Skills
Good study habits can be highlighted by creating posters during a brainstorming session. Break students into groups and assign every group a poster, with themes such as "Good Study Habits" and "How to Make Learning Fun." Discuss with the students what lists of words and pictures could go on the posters and then have them present the posters to the rest of the class. Hang the posters in the classroom.

Home Skills
Self-care and completing chores are life skills that can be taught in ways that make them seem fun. Hygiene routines can be made into games, such as singing the alphabet every time a child washes her hands after using the bathroom and before eating or counting the number of clothes you can fold and put away in five minutes. Suggest ways to enjoy a personal care or cleaning routine, such as singing while washing the dishes or dancing to music while vacuuming a room, for example.

Work Skills
Highlight the results of productivity and a strong work ethic by having students create a skit contrasting two different work styles. Have one person sit and act lazy and apathetic at a desk while another person works diligently and communicates with other workers. Show the lazy worker struggling to get through the day while the hard worker enjoys everything he is accomplishing. The students will enjoy creating workplace characters and they will also absorb the values of a work ethic when you discuss the benefits for those who are fully engaged in their work.

Money Skills
Money skills can be acquired through interactive and fun lessons. Board games, such as "Life" and "Monopoly," are entertaining ways for students to learn to deal with money and purchases. Another important area to explore is establishing a budget. Distribute catalogs of popular products and have the students pretend they have a certain amount of money to spend in their budget. Have them choose the products based on that amount.
