How the Grinch Stole Christmas Activities for Second Graders
By:Krystal Miller

Around Christmas, some second grade teachers choose to have a lesson plan about the book and movie, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas." When planning lessons about the Grinch, use your imagination to create activities the children will love doing. From a Who-Ville dress-up day to a Christmas ornament relay race, your second graders will enjoy a few exciting activities when learning about the green, small-hearted Grinch that does not like Christmas.

Dress-Up Day
Have a dress-up day for your second graders and allow them to dress like "Who's" from Who-Ville or the Grinch. The "Who's" can wear crazy hair, bright-colored clothes and make-up. The Grinch can wear a green sweat suit and socks on his hand. You can also just create different stations like hair, make-up and a few dress-up clothes for other students who want to participate.

Quiz
Let your students watch the movie, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas," and then create a quiz. The students must watch the show carefully to be able to answer all the questions on the quiz. Tell your second graders they will earn a prize if they can answer all the questions correctly. Example questions include "What is the little girl's name who catches the Grinch stealing presents?" and "Where does the Grinch live?"

Grinch Play
Print a dialog for the movie or book and assign each student a character. The students can practice their parts and try to memorize them or use the dialog. Allow the students to rehearse for a few days and then present the play to another class. For added excitement, allow the children to dress their part. For example, Cindy Lou Who has tall hair and pigtails and the Grinch can wear a Grinch costume. Let the student wear a Santa hat and Christmas shirt if they prefer not to dress-up.

Christmas Ornament Relay Race
The Grinch does not like Christmas and removes all the ornaments from the trees. Tell the students it is their job to put the ornaments back on the tree. Purchase at least two small Christmas trees and ornaments for each tree. Divide the students up into even teams and give each team the same amount of ornaments. When you say, "Go," the students will race to their team Christmas tree one at a time to hang the ornaments on the tree. The first team to hang all their ornaments wins the relay race.
