How to Find English Lessons
By:Collaborator

While many people have excellent English writing and speaking abilities, others either need to improve their English skills or are just starting to learn the language. Finding English lessons can be a challenge, but there are several options available that can meet your individual needs. Some of these options are explored below.

Call your local adult education center. Adult education centers often offer specific classes in both remedial English, which will help you learn basic reading and writing skills, as well as English as a Second Language courses for those who have limited or no English language skills. The courses are often free (though there may be a fee for some materials).

Check with literacy organizations. Literacy organizations like Literacy Volunteers of America often provide tutors or classes for students. Since the organizations are primarily staffed by volunteers, there is typically no fee involved. This option works best for those who have limited funds and schedules that require some flexibility.

Search for private tutoring options. Sites such as English Tutors Online offer online tutoring sessions for as little as $15 an hour. EduWizards allows you to search for specific tutors based on their experiences and backgrounds. These options work best for those who have specific learning needs or those who work best with one-on-one attention but who also perform well in an online environment.

Locate websites offering free online lessons and related materials. Sites like Dave's ESL Cafe and The English Page offer free lesson plans, activities, printables, study guides, community forums and more to help the English language learner. This option works best for those with limited time, those who work best at their own pace and those who are comfortable working in an online environment.

Download lessons to your MP3 player. Check out oCulture (www.oculture.com/2006/10/foreign_languag.html) to locate lessons (many of which are free) that you can download to your MP3 player. This option works best for those who have limited time, work best at their own pace and are disciplined enough to keep up with the lessons.

Check out or purchase books, CDs and DVDs from your local library. Many libraries carry a number of books, workbooks, CDs and DVDs for developing your English language skills. This is a smart option for the budget-conscious student.
