Halloween Activities for the Classroom
By:Veronica Ouellette

Halloween is a holiday that children throughout the United States look forward to each year. Most children enjoy dressing dress up as their favorite super hero, scary monster or another character and spend the month planning their costume. To keep students engaged during October, teachers can make learning fun with Halloween themed lessons.

History Lesson

An obvious lesson about Halloween would be to teach students the history behind the holiday. The lesson can involve where the holiday originated, how it came to be celebrated, and how people around the world celebrate Halloween.

Vocabulary and Reading Lesson

Vocabulary and reading go hand in hand, so a lesson using the words most commonly associated with Halloween -- witch, ghost, haunted, spooky, pumpkin and others -- will help students understand the meaning of the words. Teachers can use a word search, crossword puzzles, spooky themed short stories and poems and multiple choice questions to emphasize spelling or vocabulary.

Math Lesson

Halloween activities can also help with counting and sequence of numbers. For example, the teacher can use ghosts or pumpkins as a guide to help students find the missing number in a sequence, or count how many ghosts are in a picture that they can color after.

Relaxed Lesson

Once the lesson is over, allow the children to associate what they learned in a fun-filled activity. Students can have a coloring contest, carve pumpkins, have a costume party, or watch an approved scary movie.
