Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Winter Olympic Activities for Teachers
By:Charlotte Kirkwood

The Winter Olympics, held every four years, features sports like figure skating, bobsledding, ice hockey and snowboarding. For teachers looking to educate their classroom on the Winter Olympics, the history, sport, participants and ideals of the games, using Winter Olympic themed activities helps broaden the students' knowledge of the games.

Olympics Trivia

Host a Winter Olympics trivia tournament. Divide students into groups and have each group invent their own country and design their country's flag. Give the teams Winter Olympic trivia resource material, and have them compete against each other in a game show format. The team that has the most correct answers wins the gold medal, which can be a medal, candy or other prize. Questions should pertain to Winter Olympics sports, history and the unifying spirit of the Olympics.

Olympic Crafts

Students can create their own rings, Olympic torches and olive wreaths with construction paper, tape, tissue paper, green leaved branches from the yard, paper plates and paint. For a torch, have students roll a piece of white construction paper into a cone and glue layered red, orange and yellow tissue paper inside the cone. An olive wreath can be crafted by winding branches into a circlet and securing the ends with tape. Cut the center out of paper plates to form Olympic rings, then paint the rings Olympic colors and glue them together.

Track a Sport

Involve students in the Winter Olympics by following a sport in the classroom. Have the kids vote on what sport the class will follow. Kids should familiarize themselves with the participating countries and discuss the progression of the competition in class. Kids can even choose which countries to root for, watch footage of the sport and predict winners.

Olympics Timeline

Create a timeline of the winter Olympics. On a long roll of butcher paper, have kids mark the years of the winter Olympics, where they were hosted, and major Olympic events, such as major upsets, political controversies or medal records.
