Travel in Latin America
Hey Doug,
It's so funny to think that I was one of the gringos wandering around Guanajuato last summer, though I'm not of the "Ugly American" persuasion so hopefully I didn't annoy you. I'm sure that I probably saw you around the Jardin (my second home) or in a cafe. I was there for about six weeks, taking an advanced Spanish conversation class and doing an internship at the university. I'm glad to hear that the gringos are behaving, and I think that it has a lot to do with more and more students traveling to Gto to study. My university (here in the U.S.)has recently put a lot of resources into developing a good global studies program and lots of opportunities for students to study abroad. I think that the twenty-somethings right now are a lot more globally minded than those who came before us. I know that the people I studied with at Don Quijote and the people in my homestay were, for the most part, intelligent and open-minded people who just wanted to learn. Hopefully, the trend will continue and you will see less and less of the glaring examples of American stupidity in the streets of beautiful Guanajuato.
All in all, I think the "Ugly Americans" bother other Americans more than anyone else. The people of Guanajuato at least, as you said, are able to make a living and feed their families off of them. You and I have to sit back and cringe and feel ashamed about their behavior and pay for it by being classified in the same group with them. Yuck!
