Dear Philip;
It would be advisable for you to go ahead and acquire your degree in most any field, then if you want go ahead and get a TESL certificate. I got my degree in English and another in Second Education, but never got a TESL certificate because a "real" teaching license overrode that. Work on your spelling and punctuation as you might embarrass yourself in front of some knowledgeable students. I taught in Korea for 15 years and know about the field. Actually, after you get a degree, try Korea. It's a good starting point, if not a little duller now than in the past. Good luck and don't try any short cuts; you'll regret it later.
