Ecuador - Quito Budget Accommodation
By:Matthew Coe

Going to Quito, Ecuador? Want to know the best area and hostels to stay in? This article has independent research from real backpackers.

In Quito the majority of backpackers stay in the new quarter of the City as its safer after dark and closer to the night life. However the Chicago hostel (Los Rios 1730 A y Briceno) in the San Blas neighbourhood of the old quarter is only a 10min walk from the new town and offers some of the best hospitality in South America! Theresa the manager of the hostel ensures that guests don't feel too much need to stray in to the dangers of the outside after dark as at the Chicago Hostel the liquor runs strong and cheap! Watch her when pouring though - as a 'Chicago nectar' (incredibly powerful local spirit) followed by a refreshing beer might have consequences should Theresa have spiked said beer with vodka (guaranteed to bring on a hang over from hell) - not ideal when at nearly 3,000m altitude!

Rumi Wilko eco lodge in Villcabamba is a great place to stay - beautiful location by the river and you'll get your own cabanna.

In Cuenca we stayed the hotel Las Americas 13-59 Mariano Cueva. Rooms have private bathroms, hot water & cable TV.

In Banios we would recommend the Grand Rio Hostel on Thomas Halflants Y Rocafuerte - very comfortable, central & affordable
