How to Travel to the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
By:Suzanna Hulmes

Travelers can visit the Galapagos Islands by first traveling to Ecuador. The Galapagos Islands are situated 1,000 kilometers from the mainland of Ecuador, in South America. According to Lonely Planet, these islands are famous for the wide variety of wildlife that inhabit the islands, such as seals and a range of birds. Nature enthusiasts visit this region because the animals are famously unafraid of humans due to the isolated location.

Prepare for your trip to the Galapagos Islands by ensuring your passport is valid for an additional six months after the date you plan to enter Ecuador, as this is one of the requirements for tourists to enter the country. You may also be asked to prove that you can support yourself for the duration of your stay by showing a credit card.

Book a flight online, or at a travel agency, in advance. Lonely Planet advises that flying is the safest method of travel into the country, to avoid the roadless area that lies between Panama and Colombia named the Damien Gap. This area is known to be unsafe for travelers due to banditry. For lower flight prices, aim to avoid the peak traveling times that run from late June to early September and from early December to early January.

Fly to the Galapagos Islands from the mainland. TAME is one of the major airlines that flies between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands on a daily basis. Book your flight in advance to be sure to get a seat. Alternatively visit a travel agency in Ecuador, as it is common for travelers not to turn up, meaning that seats will be re-sold. Flights take around an hour and a half, with round trip prices varying between $300 and $344, depending upon the time of year. Peak season prices will be higher.
