How to Teach English in Uruguay
By:Lane Cummings

Teaching English is a viable way to travel around the world and earn money as you do so. Teaching English in Uruguay is done either by getting your TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or your TESOL certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). However, because Uruguay is such a small, somewhat under-developed country, you can volunteer to teach there, if you're not interested in earning money.

Enroll in a TESOL or TEFL certification class. Visit the websites of www.americantesol.com or www.tefljobplacement.com to find a certification program near you, or you can get certified online. These programs both have direct job placement programs upon completion of your certificate.

Complete your certificate and ask for job placement in Uruguay effective your desired dates of travel. Email your certification program a copy of your resume or CV.

Get immunizations for Hepatitis A, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus and Yellow Fever.

Purchase your plane ticket. Schools seldom provide airfare.

Organize your accommodations. Some schools in Uruguay offer hostels or host stay families for teachers. If you'd prefer to live in an apartment or hotel, ask the school for recommendations.

Learn Spanish. If you already know Spanish, practice to make sure your language skills are fresh. If you don't know Spanish, learn basic phrases so that your adjustment to life in Uruguay is easier.

Budget your finances. The average cost of living in Uruguay is $300 to $500 per month, which is approximately what an English teacher makes monthly, depending on needs and expenses. Make sure you'll have enough money to support your lifestyle and unforeseen emergencies.
