Boutique Hotels in Montevideo, Uruguay
By:Meg Campbell

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and its largest city. The city's population is roughly 1.3 million, and it's home to a rich culture and a wide variety of historic architecture. Montevideo is a prime tourist destination, in part because it's located directly across Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city. The city has several boutique hotels.

Cala di Volpe
The Cala di Volpe Boutique Hotel is touted as Montevideo's first boutique hotel. It's on the coast in Punta Carretas, and every room has a view of where the widest river in the world meets the ocean. The most popular mall in the country, the Punta Carretas Shopping, is located just a few feet away. Its restaurant, Azzurro Ristorante, serves national and international cuisines as well as a daily afternoon tea. The hotel has several large-capacity rooms equipped with furniture and technology for business or group meetings. The fitness center has state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a sauna, swimming pool, a Jacuzzi and a relaxation room. There are four types of guest rooms, from standard to executive suite. All rooms have wireless Internet, 32-inch high-definition televisions, fully stocked refrigerators and safes.

Belmont House
The Belmont House is one of Montevideo's most prominent boutique hotels. It's on the water in the residential neighborhood of Carrasco, a few minutes from downtown and the airport. Many famous people have stayed at the Belmont House, from John McEnroe to Hillary Clinton to Fidel Castro to Japan's Princess Sayako. The hotel has a restaurant and a separate bar. Its tea room serves an authentic English tea daily. Amenities include transportation to and from anywhere in the city, club membership at Carrasco Lawn Tennis, golf discounts, wireless Internet, a gym and a sauna. There are a total of 24 rooms and four suites, each with a garden view. Rooms are equipped with queen or king size beds, air conditioning, cable television, safes and towel heaters. Some rooms have a Jacuzzi, fireplace or balcony.

Le Biblo
Le Biblo is also in Carrasco, an exclusive residential area of Montevideo, just across from the ocean and boardwalk. The hotel was once the property of Uruguay's former President Berro. It is located close to some of the best restaurants and cafes in the country, including Nuevo García, Café Misterio, La Pasiva and Medialunas Calentitas. Le Biblo has a library, bar, tea salon and a large meeting room. There's an outdoor swimming pool, and the hotel provides opportunities to go horseback riding, take polo lessons, play a game of tennis or a round of golf. All of the hotel's guestrooms are suites, decorated in a clean, modern aesthetic. Room amenities vary, but most suites are equipped with wireless and cable Internet, king-size beds, 42-inch plasma televisions, air conditioning, Jacuzzis, writing desks and personal safes.
