Copan Honduras Offers An Archeological Treasure
By:Jeremy C.

Copan Honduras is an archeological treasure located in the west of Honduras and bordering Guatemala. It is located in a fertile valley. The city has archeological sites that were built around the classic period of the Mayan civilization. The city's written history started during the classic period. According to historical records, Copan was the center of a powerful kingdom that dominated the south of the Mayan territory. While the city is still standing today, it has been heavily eroded by the Copan River.

The town of Copan, or Copan Ruinas, is a village that has cobblestone roads. The homes are made out of adobe and their roofs are red, due to the red tile that is in abundance. The village is one of the best places to learn about the history of the Mayan people and the history of Honduras. The Mayan Ruins are a treasure for humanity and have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Tourists can learn more about Copan by visiting the archeological park. It is just half a mile away from Copan Ruinas and it is opened from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The park is great for people who want to learn history or who simply want to be amazed by the ruins and the ingenuity of the Mayan people, who have been considered to be the best artists of the world. Those who do not want to walk can rent a horse or take a taxi cab to ride around Copan.

Visitors will be amazed by the Acropolis, or major city, that is located in the center of Copan Honduras. The two plazas - the West Court and the East Court, as they have been named - are surrounded by two elevated structures. Visitors can admire the different hieroglyphics that are found all around the city. For the Mayan people, hieroglyphics were the same as art.

One of the most important places in the ruins is the Ball Court. It is a place where religion and mysticism mixed with sports. The court looks like a big stadium made out of stone. Two teams play the game, and the goal of the game is to pass a rubber ball through a stone ring that is located at the side of the field. There are different stories about how the games got started. One talks about the fight between light and darkness. Another one says that there was a competition between the God of Rain and the God of the wind (Tlaloc versus Quetzalcoatl).

The Mayan culture keeps on mystifying people through the ages, starting with Spanish conquerors until now. The mysticism grows as people visit these wonderful sites and are amazed by the beauty, the science and the art that can be found when visiting Copan Honduras.
