How to Learn a Second Language - 4 Effective Ways of Learning a New Language
By:Kayleigh Thomas

Once that decision has been made to learn a second language it's crucial to look at the most effective language learning systems. There are a variety of options open to the student. These include online related courses, group classes, self instructed resources, or to go with one-on-one tutoring.

Each of these teaching methods offer there own positive and negative points. We can go through those here to help in making the best decision on learning a foreign language.

Group Classes - It might be possible to locate a choice of language classes in the local area at a vocational school or college, although this option will depend on where you live. These classes can last for 6 weeks or longer and can range from the beginner, intermediate or advanced lessons. The cost will depend on the chosen school, although with this type of learning system you ought to get a good level of education. Its best to opt for a native-speaking teacher and aim for a small class size - ten participants or so would be ideal. While the group classes will be able to offer a good level of support and education these lessons will be restrictive in regards to the class schedule and having sufficient free-time to attend.

Online Courses - Tuition is similar to a group class with the exception that the teaching is done online. A lot of the same schools that provide the group sessions are able to provide tuition online. While this doesn't give the feeling of being in a classroom it is essentially the same education that's being provided. This teaching method also offers the convenience of setting your own study schedule - no need to be tied to a class program. And in most cases these online courses are available at a more affordable rate.

Tutoring - The most expensive option is private tutoring. However, one-on-one tutoring is able to give the best education, although this does still depend on picking a suitable tutor. One benefit is the ability to choose the duration of each private session. It's possible to go with a tutor for a series of lessons or just for the occasional revision or study of a language. The sessions can be worked into your own individual schedule which is ideal for that busy someone. As mentioned, it can be costly, with rates at $50 per hour or so which can soon add up if starting from scratch.

Self Instruction - There are a variety of options to teach yourself a new language. Audio programs, books, software, or a combination of there are popular options. It's possible to pick up a choice of multi-media software learning tools. These programs offer great value and often feature interactive audio lessons, software based learning games, and illustrated culture and grammar lessons. You'll get a program that gives a combination of learning techniques with the ability to learn at your own pace. As the software is going to be sitting on your computer its possible to go back and freshen up your skills at any time you wish without further expense. And these software tools are often surprisingly affordable.

On deciding how to learn a second language its best to adopt a program that matches the individuals needs in question, such as learning pace, lifestyle and to fit comfortably within the finances.
