Learning Spanish verbs- Regular verbs ending in ‘ar’

Verbs are a very important part of any language. You need to know how to conjugate the verbs depending on the subject that you are using. Below are some very useful verbs and the conjugations. Spanish verbs fall into two primary categories, regular and irregular verbs. The regular verbs are typically all conjugated in the same way every time. The irregular verbs do not conjugate in a typical way. You must memorize the irregular verbs.

The infinite of the verb is the base form of the verb. In English, this is expressed by ‘to’. For example, to learn, to speak, to live. In Spanish there are three main verb endings for infinitives. The verbs end in ‘ar’, ‘er’ or ‘ir’. The part of the verb that is left when you remove the infinitive is called the stem.

We will start with most regular ‘ar’ verbs in the present tense. The corresponding subject pronoun for each tense is listed in parenthesis before the verb. Since the ending of the verbs indicate the subject pronoun clearly, they are usually omitted when speaking. Sometimes they are used to create emphasis.

Verb: Hablar – to speak, to talk

I speak (yo) Habl-o

You speak (familiar) (tú) Habl-as

He, she, it speaks (él, ella) Habl-a

We speak (nosotros) Habl-amosYou speak (familiar) (vosotros) habl-áis You , they speak (plural) (ustedes, ellos, ellas) Habl-an

The present tense endings for the regular verbs ending in ‘ar’ are :

Singular: o, as, a Plural: amos, áis and an. You can take these endings and apply them to all regular verbs ending in ‘ar’.
