How to Learn German Through Games for Kids
By:Penny Morris

It is a good idea to introduce children to foreign languages from an early age. Children who learn a foreign language from an early age have a better chance of retaining that language as an adult. Children can learn German through textbooks, songs, videos or worksheets, but you may find their favorite learning style to be a simple game. Language games can reinforce new vocabulary and grammar while keeping your child's attention.

Online games

Determine the focus of the game. There are many online games that will drill students on vocabulary and others that will concentrate on grammar. The game should enhance the weekly lesson.

Choose an online game. There are many websites that offer free interactive online games to help kids learn German. DigitalDialects.com/German.htm offers help with vocabulary and verb conjugations.

Play the game with your child. Help guide them through any errors they make. Refer them back to their textbooks if they are having trouble with a word or concept.

Classroom games

Let the children play together offline if you have multiple students. There are several games that can be played in a classroom or home school environment.

Print out lotto cards from EnchantedLearning.com. Call out the name of the vocabulary word on the card in German. The students must recognize the word in order to place a marker on the space. The first student to place four markers in a row wins.

Draw a dart board on a blackboard. Number the spaces from the outer ring inwards beginning with five points. The inner-most circle is worth 30 points. If you have many students, you can split them into teams. One student at a time approaches the board. They must answer a question pertaining to the day's lesson. If they answer correctly, hand them a piece of chalk, blindfold them, spin them twice and let them try to hit a bull's-eye.
