Eight Half-Serious Phrases You Can Use
By:Andrea T. Hubb

Enough with the usual Italian phrases. Do you want to chat up a cute Italian stranger? Here are eight half-serious phrases you can use.

Bello il tuo cane, di che razza e'? - What race is it?

(Walking the dog at the park)

Avresti due monete da cinquanta centesimi da cambiare? - Would you have two 50c coins to change?

(At the vending machine)

Scusa e' questa la fila per londra? - excuse me is this the queue for London?

(At the check-in at the airport)

Ma non ci siano gia' visti? - Haven't we met before?

(To be used at any occasion, but never ever as very first sentence)

Sai se si puo' parcheggiare qui? - Do you know if it is possible to park here?

(Parking the car?)

Ti sei persa / perso? (talking to a woman or a man respectively) Are you lost?

(Walking on the street spotting a stranger with a lost look on his/her face. Use this phrase only if you are sure you will not sound sleazy)

Questa poltrona e' libera! - Is this chair taken?

(At Starbucks or wherever you can share the table - "libera" actually means "free")

E' libera questa poltrona?

(It's the same sentence, but this is a question. I have put the words in a different order because it is easier to be understood in case you do not get the intonation right. The question is grammatically and syntactically correct in both ways)

Quale film mi consigli? - What movie would you recommend?

(At the movie rental place)
