Why Is Accent Reduction Important?
By:Chris Manetzke

There is a reality in the world we live in that, quite honestly, isn’t very pretty (if we’re honest) and isn’t something we want to admit to. But the hard cold truth is…those of us with accents, especially heavy accents, have a difficult time in many phases of our life. In this article, I’m going to explain why accent reduction is so important in the world we live in. As I said, these are not popular facts, but they are facts non the list.

At the very top of the list is our professional life. Like it or not, especially if you live in the United States, it’s difficult to get anywhere in business, especially if you’re dealing with the public, if you have a heavy accent. Customer service is a huge part of our day. How many people get totally frustrated when they call up a company for service, one that outsources overseas, and they get somebody on the other end who they can’t understand? It’s very common today.

But business is only the tip of the iceberg. Even in our personal lives, having a heavy accent can work against us, especially when trying to have a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Like it or not, many times we are judge by how we speak. The hint of an accent immediately sets off the “foreigner” alarm and many native born Americans will be reluctant to start a relationship with a foreigner for too many reasons go to into in the space of this article. It may not be fair, but it is a fact of our lives that we have to deal with.

And then of course, there is simply coexisting in the world. How frustrating is it to walk into a card shop, ask for something and the person across the counter doesn’t understand what you’re saying. Fair or not, most Americans are not trained to understand heavy accents. This makes it very frustrating just communicating with others for something as simple as getting directions to the nearest gas station.

You really can’t understand how frustrating it is having a heavy accent unless you have one. Those that do, know exactly what I’m talking about. So, if you’re thinking about accent reduction, there is a very good chance that it will be of more help to you than you can possibly imagine.
