English schools in Korea

Busan (Haeundae-Gu)
School:Busan Foreign School

BUSAN FOREIGN SCHOOL(BFS) is an international school with an American educational philosophy and curriculum. Our mission is to inspire each learner and provide educational services that nurture their social, intellectual, emotional, and physical growth. BFS students are prepared to enter top universities worldwide and become responsible, contributing citizens in a rapidly changing world. Our ongoing commitment to intercultural understanding and a strong partnership of students, parents, and teachers, allows us to achieve this in a caring and supportive environment.

Busan Foreign School (BFS) first began to serve the community of Busan in October of 1996. The school is located in Haeundae New Town; a new and expanding area of Busan. In addition, the New Town area is well populated by an expatriate community that is doing business in the areas surrounding Busan. This district expects to see continuous growth of foreign business and development in the near future. It is the mission of BFS to offer the highest quality North American-style education to all students enrolling in the school.

Most of our students are members of foreign families that have relocated to Korea due to their parents working in the Busan area. BFS also serves third culture Children living in Korea and ethnic Koreans returning to Korea after living overseas for five or more years. Though a majority of the students live in the Busan area, students from the areas surrounding Busan; such as the towns of Ulsan, Changwon and the Kimhae area are also enrolled.

BFS offer a complete Educational Program; Nursery through 12 grade. We offer a wide range of courses to all grade levels. For students in need of ESL support, we offer Level I, II, and III ESL classes. For students who need additional support, the school offers an after-school ESL program for an additional 5 hours a week. ESL students are slowly integrated into the regular classroom and eventually exited from the ESL program. In Middle School and High School, where English skills are stronger, the school offers Speech, Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, Korean I and Korean II as electives. A large percentage of the student population is classified as ESL; more then one third of the middle and high school student population fall into this category. All grades distinguish between ESL and non ESL students. ESL students attend ESL classes instead of Social Studies and English classes. Middle school and High school each have a dedicated full time ESL teacher.

BFS has shown tremendous growth in the past several years. Beginning with just a Kindergarten through sixth grade program, serving a small number of students, the school has grown to include inclusive program, offering full service to all students from Nursery to Twelfth grade. Although the school has grown, we continue to emphasize small class size as a vehicle for individualized instruction for all of our students. In addition, the school has added advanced level courses and we maintain a priority of aligning our curriculum to the standards found in the United States.
